Ocado to close Hatfield distribution centre putting 2,300 jobs at risk -

Ocado in the UK picks ecommerce grocery orders exclusively from large scale CFCs supported by their home built WCS solutions.

Hatfield was selected as their first location for the following reasons

  • Proximity to affluent urban and suburban areas of London and nearby counties
  • Proximity to an area with a base/history of lower waged/skilled workers
  • Not far from one of the head offices of supermarket giant Tesco, allowing easier recruitment of skilled grocery buyers
  • Close to a well regarded polytechnical university.

SURPRISE! Amazon shuts down warehouse after 5-7 years, Ocado shutting down number 1 makes sense.

Yes and no. UK Retailers usually sweat their warehouse assets a lot longer, with interim refreshes of mechanical equipment.

I think it is more that Ocado has outgrown the site (which they bought when there were a much smaller company, obviously) and they have rotated capacity into bigger sites. The mechanical equipment is end of life. Likely they will get a good price to vacate.
