David’s Bridal launches wedding planning platform with vendor marketplace

Dive Brief: Adding another digital service, David’s Bridal has introduced Pearl by David’s, a new wedding planning platform that includes a vendor marketplace for couples, the company announced Thursday.

Here are my takeaways:

  • David’s Bridal wants to compete witH Zola, WeddingWire, Joy, TheKnot.
It’s a competitive category. Zola is a monster. As a D2C play, it will be hard to compete head-on.

  • However, David’s has 300 store locations. As a planning app to support its stores, it could be very helpful and likely peel off a percentage of those brides and couples looking for support, but may not have chosen one of the apps.

  • The whole thing reads a little like a promotion for its David’s Loyalty program. So it’s another way to lock couples in.

Not feeling great about this, as it’s hard for a retailer to invest like Zola who has raised $190M.
