Evri (formerly Hermes) does not have a good reputation for service. They are commonly used by ecommerce retailers because they are often the cheapest for 3-5 day, ditto for private sellers on eBay etc.
Local drivers are self employed, piece rate, originally called “lifestyle” couriers (doing is part time afternoons/evenings) but many are now full time and collect their parcels from the depot for a few extra pennies per parcel, and do their rounds in a large panel van.
